Step 2 - Enroll in the Exam
Once you’ve enrolled in the courses, you’re eligible to take the exam—a chance to prove what you’ve learned and what you’re capable of. The exam includes 100 questions and must be completed in one sitting within 2 hours. It’s open book, because in the real world, knowing how to find the right answers is just as powerful as memorizing them.
You’ll have two opportunities each calendar year to pass, and a score of 85% or higher earns your certification. There’s no cost to retake it, and no penalty for trying again next year if needed. You’ve got this—learn the material, use the tools, and show what you can do.

The exam tests your understanding of the material covered in the 4 course - Ecosystem, Economics, Building Blocks and Compliance. It’s designed to ensure you can apply your knowledge, not just memorize facts.
You do not need to go to a testing center to take the exam. You can take the exam from anywhere you choose. A couple of key things to keep in mind:
- This is an open-book exam - meaning that you can reference materials in the course or online to find the answers. It is just as important that you know where to go to get answers than it is to know the answers off the top of your head.
- The exam is 100 questions, and you have two hours to take the exam.

You’ll receive your official digital certificate and CFTPM designation, which you can use on LinkedIn, resumes, email signatures, and business cards. You’ll also get continuing education access to stay current year after year.
Don’t worry—you get unlimited free retakes, and up to two attempts per calendar year. You’re not penalized for trying again.

Yes. To maintain your certification, you’ll need to pay the $49 annual recertification fee and complete 12 hours of continuing education each year logged in the Payments Academy. This ensures you stay current in a fast-changing industry.
Note: Employees who are part of our Startup and Unlimited employer plans will not have an annual recertification fee.
Yes and No. There are no hard and fast requirements for time spent in the industry, as our experience shows that someone in a startup who has spent 3 months launching a program often has more knowledge than someone in a large company who has worked in payments for 20 years.
However, if you have no experience in the industry, you will have very little context for the material and the amount of material may be overwhelming.
Yes. The CFTPM certification demonstrates a strong grasp of payments compliance and operational readiness, and is recognized by professionals across FinTech, Issuing Banks, and Program Managers.
Absolutely. Many professionals get reimbursed by their employer. You have two options:
- Pay for the exam yourself and get reimbursed. You will be emailed a receipt upon payment.
